A Review of Gender and the Sendai Framework
This publication reviews the strengths and gaps of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 in relation to women, gender equality and disaster risk reduction (DRR). It is part of a series of thematic reports that were produced to inform the Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework.
The Review of Gender and the Sendai Framework, which is addressed to countries and stakeholders in the field of DRR, highlights that gender is a fundamental part of the social organization in all societies and that gender inequality is a key driver of disaster risk, requiring greater attention and more focused action and resources than have been directed to this issue during the first seven years of the Sendai Framework implementation. It also outlines how, despite some shortcomings, the Sendai Framework provides an ample mandate for governments, the United Nations and other stakeholders to pursue gender-responsive DRR as part of the core business of building resilience.
